Pride and Prejudice — romantic comedy or class critique?

I always thought it was a romantic comedy until I read it more carefully and realized Austen is being savage about class, inheritance, and the limited options available to women. Which reading do you find more interesting?

Both simultaneously. That's what makes it a masterpiece — the romance works on its own terms and the satire works on its own terms.

Austen is fundamentally a social satirist who happened to write in the form of romantic comedy. The romance is the vehicle, not the destination.
