Every time I mention I like Brandon Sanderson someone has to tell me his prose is bad. But I've read 8 of his books and I genuinely don't understand the complaint. Is this a literary fiction vs genre fiction snobbery thing?
His prose is functional, not beautiful. That's fine — not every book needs to be Nabokov. The worldbuilding and plotting are genuinely exceptional.
I will die on the hill that Way of Kings is a masterpiece and anyone who disagrees hasn't finished it
The prose critique is valid but overstated. Compared to most genre fiction he's perfectly readable. The hate is definitely partially snobbery.
