Best standalone fantasy novel — no series needed
Trying to get my non-reader friend into fantasy but they're scared of committing to a 10-book series. What's your best standalone recommendation?

Circe by Madeline Miller. Beautiful prose, Greek mythology, genuinely moving. Even people who hate fantasy love this one.
The House in the Cerulean Sea. Cozy, warm, not overwhelming. Perfect entry point.
Ender's Game if they like sci-fi adjacent. Or The Giver if they want something short and devastating.
