"This book analyses the new pattern of security concerns of the Central Asian successor states, i.e. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, Turkmenistan and Tadzhikistan. It argues that although some form of national consolidation occurred during the Soviet period, divisions within each national grouping remain. These states are confronted with the fact that subnational, supranational and national loyalties frequently override a population's loyalty to the state.
