A lesbian decides to become a policewoman. The protagonist is Abigail Fitzpatrick of Florida, who joins the police in a reaction to the stress of her previous work--she was a paramedic--and her failure to save a boy's life. The novel describes her training, the obstacles she faces because of her sexual orientation, and the well-meaning attempts by men officers to cure her.
