"Useful survey rejects idea that Canudos was a manifestation of messianism and sees it instead as a protest of the rural poor against the destruction of their community and in support of a world free of landowners and coroneis. For this reason, the death of Conselheiro did not end the revolt. Incorporates most modern scholarship and a few primary sources, but is not aware of R.
