Black Sea, Golden Steppes

*Black Sea, Golden Steppes* chronicles the evolving geographical knowledge of the Ukrainian steppes and the Black Sea coast while highlighting the changing political environment of the region. Using sixteenth- to eighteenth-century originals as illustrations, the author documents the frontier nature of Ukraine, the centuries long power political contest between regional adversaries, and the eventual incorporation of Ukraine into a familiar if not standardized geographic and political framework.
